GIMP Quickie No. 1 – Photo Painting Effect

Original Scarlet Macaw Photo

Step 1

• Colors > Components > Decompose
• Color Model HSV
• OK
• Copy the "saturation" layer.
• Close the grayscale window.
• Paste the "saturation" layer over the original photo layer.
• Layer Mode Value

Saturation Layer, Value Mode

Step 2

• Right-click in Layers dialogue > New from Visible
• Colors > Brightness-Contrast
• Contrast +10
• OK

• Clean up any areas you don't like.
• (I cleaned up the black areas at the lower right.)

• Crop to taste.
